Habitat Pile Work Party

September 27, 2023 , 9:00 am 11:30 am

Help GPC build Habitat Piles at Grovers Creek Preserve!

Grovers Creek Preserve is getting a makeover. A sprawling 279 acres, this preserve features diverse forested habitat that ranges from a rare patch of 200-year-old Sitka spruce, hemlock, cedar and Douglas fir to young monocultures of Douglas fir. GPC is on a mission to bring wildlife and native plant communities back to the young forests of this preserve.

For this work party, we invite you to join us in building habitat piles out of downed logs and woody debris. Call it a critter condo and let the wildlife party begin!

What: Habitat Pile building at Grovers Creek Preserve

When: Wednesday, September 27th from 9am-11:30am

Where: Grovers Creek Preserve in Indianola, WA – additional parking information and directions will be sent in an email when your sign-up is confirmed.

Work: Together we will be building a habitat pile, which is a pile of logs and other dead plant material that creates protected pockets where small mammals, amphibians and birds can find refuge from predators, and houses insects that help decompose plant materials. Don’t know how to build a habitat pile? Just bring yourself and we will teach you!

Accessibility: We will walk approximately 0.5 miles to access the work site via a relatively flat and wide trail. We will be doing work primarily with our hands and some small hand tools. The work will involve lifting logs, including squatting, bending and lifting motions, as well as walking over uneven terrain in some locations. Great Peninsula Conservancy will provide all tools and gloves.
