This week's Nature Quiz goes out to all the trackers out there! Learning to recognize tracks and sign can help use appreciate all the creatures that we rarely see, but who are still living around us.

These tracks belong to a very charismatic creature in our region. You might notice that these prints have five digits and that this is very clearly on one of our shorelines. Many terrestrial animals use our beaches like they do our trails and roads - easy passage - though the owner of these prints might be a little more stuck to the shores.

We'd love to hear stories about encounters with the owners of these prints or even experiences with tracking!

Welcome to another Sunday Nature Quiz with Great Peninsula Conservancy!

Have you seen these brilliantly colored leaves out on a spring walk? This deciduous vine is just pushing out leaves and they are a pleasant burgundy until later in the season. While not uncommon across our region, we usually only find it growing in sunny and dry, exposed sites. Those three leaves and shiny leaves should give you pause, but lots of animals browse on this plant's leaves and eat it's fruit. Look closely and you can see tiny flowers just about to open.

Let us know if you've ever had an encounter (hopefully not too close), with this plant!

Great Peninsula Conservancy will host a tour of the McDermott Point Preserve on Sunday, April 21st from 10am-12pm. This new preserve is publicly accessible by non-motorized boat, so bring your own kayak and enjoy a short paddle to the Point where we’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history and future of this Key Peninsula gem. Special guests include the members of GPC’s 2023-2024 Forage Fish Survey Team, and Key Peninsula Historical Society’s Tim Kezelle. Social hour to follow at the Longbranch Marina!

Join GPC staff for the final push of the “Coarse Woody Debris Countdown” work party series at Grovers Creek Preserve! We will be building habitat piles and constructed logs to promote forest regeneration, biodiversity, and support local wildlife. Come out on either Saturday April 20th or Monday April 22nd to help us reach our goal of building 25 coarse woody debris structures by Earth Day 2024.
