Orca Recovery Stewardship Day

October 19, 2019, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

When: Saturday, Oct. 19th, 9am-12pm

Where: Lay Wildrose Preserve, 8223 Rosedale Street NW, Gig Harbor, WA 98335

What: Join Great Peninsula Conservancy, with support from Pierce Conservation District, in taking action for Puget Sound Orca Recovery Day! GPC’s stewardship team will work with volunteers to plant native trees and shrubs and remove invasive blackberry along the estuary shoreline where Rosedale Creek (a stream hosting both Coho and Chum salmon runs) meets the tidelands. With your help, GPC can improve this habitat for salmon and for the resident orcas who depend on them for food!  Be sure to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a water bottle.  GPC will bring the rest!

Orca health starts here! RSVP today!

Orcas in Puget Sound: The Southern Resident Killer Whales that call Puget Sound home are critically endangered. In the past few months alone, three of our local orcas died from a combination of malnutrition, polluted waters, and stress from local boat traffic. The local population is down to only 73 orcas. We must act now if we’re going to save the most iconic species of the Pacific Northwest.

What is Orca Recovery Day? Conservation Districts around the state along with dozens of non-profit and agency partners are proud to provide folks the chance to take action on this critical issue. With dozens of different restoration and educational activities all around Washington to choose from, you’ll have a chance to get involved in the recovery of our local Orcas.
