Land Labs Habitat Pile Training

August 17, 2023 , 9:00 am 12:00 pm

Are you a current Land Labs volunteer educator, or have interest in learning what it’s like to facilitate student learning on habitat restoration in Kitsap Peninsula’s forests?

In preparation for this fall’s Land Labs, GPC’s education team invites you out to Grovers Creek Preserve to learn how we use habitat piles to bring wildlife back to one of the younger forests in our region!

At this training, we will learn how to build a habitat pile and how to facilitate safe student learning on building habitat piles at Grovers Creek Preserve. This training will include both an active component and a discussion component.

When: August 17th, 9am-12pm

Where: Grovers Creek Preserve in Indianola, WA – additional parking information and directions will be sent in an email when your sign-up is confirmed.

What you need to bring: GPC will provide all tools, protective equipment, and small snacks with coffee. We recommend wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes, and bringing sun protection.

Site Details: The work site is fairly shaded with some patches of sun. While there is a relatively clear trail to access the work site, the terrain at the work site is very uneven.

Accessibility: Movements that we will perform include squatting, lifting and some bending over. The work site is covered in downed woody debris that poses trip hazards. Talking through and practicing safe lifting will be integral to this training.

If you would like to join, but are unsure if you can perform the tasks, we encourage you to reach out! We are always interested in making accommodations for individuals with different abilities.
