April 22nd Work Party: Grovers Creek Preserve

April 22 , 10:00 am 3:00 pm

Let’s celebrate EARTH DAY! Join Great Peninsula Conservancy for our fourth and FINAL installment of our “Coarse Woody Debris Countdown” work party series at Grovers Creek Preserve! During the work party, we will be building habitat piles and constructed logs to support small animals and promote forest regeneration by mimicking nurse log conditions during decomposition. Our goal is to build 25 of these habitat features in and around Grovers Creek Preserve by April.

Come out on April 22nd to help with one of GPC’s most ambitious restoration initiatives, discover the intricacies of habitat restoration in young forests, and make the most of your Earth Day by collaborating with a delightful group of fellow stewards! This work is supported with funds from Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s Land Trust Bird Conservation Initiative and NRCS’s Conservation Stewardship Program.

GPC’s Earth Day events on April 20th and 22nd were made possible with support from Poulsbo Rotary’s Environmental Service Committee. If you’d like to learn more about their work, click here.

What: At this event, we’re hoping to build at least four more features – 2 habitat piles and 2 constructed logs. Learn more about the function of habitat piles in our forests here.
When: Monday, April 22nd, you can choose to participate in the morning session from 10:00am-12:00pm or the afternoon session from 1:00pm-3:00pm.
Where: Grovers Creek Preserve in Indianola, WA – additional parking information and directions will be sent in an email when your sign-up is confirmed.

Details:

  • Accessibility: We will walk approximately a mile to access the work site via a relatively uneven and narrow trail and access to our work site requires stepping over large logs and downed debris. We will be working primarily with our hands and hand tools such as loppers and handsaws. The work will involve lifting logs, including squatting, bending, and lifting motions. GPC will provide tools, gloves, helmets, and eye protection.
  • What to bring: Please bring your own rain gear, close-toed boots, and other weather appropriate layers. A water bottle and snack are two great additions to any outdoor outing. (Bringing kiddos? Great! Keep in mind that we think this task is best suited for ages 10 and
up. While our helmets do size down significantly, consider bringing your child’s bike helmet along for a more comfortable fit).
