Last week, GPC's stewardship team spent a day doing baseline monitoring at the newly acquired Tahuya River Preserve, where they saw bear tracks and salmon carcasses along the riverbank. These signs are proof that preserving this 147-acre property is essential to support wildlife in the region! We're excited to collaborate with the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group @the.salmoncenter to restore this former horse farm to a natural floodplain that will protect important salmon habitat and help reduce flooding downstream.

The weekend turned out pretty wet but let's not forget how beautiful it was last week! GPC's Executive Director, Nate Daniel took this image with our drone while on a site visit along Hood Canal - check out the clouds sitting down over the water and the southern end of the Olympics out in the clear skies!

This meteorological event is called a cloud inversion and it happens when warmer air traps cold air, including clouds, below it. Typically air temperature decreases as you go up in elevation but not in this case!

Join GPC staff Saturday December 2, 10am-12:30pm for a work party at Grovers Creek!

We'll be building habitat piles out of downed, woody debris. Habitat piles create protected pockets for small mammals, amphibians and birds. As the habitat pile decomposes, it mimics the conditions of a nurse log, creating soil conditions that help propagate the next generation of trees and understory plants in a forest’s life cycle.

We're so grateful for our volunteers! Thanks to the @greatergigfdn Envirocorps for bringing a bunch of intrepid volunteers out to Rocky Creek Preserve. We hauled literal tons of illegally dumped trash out of the watershed! All the while we could hear salmon down in the creek - a very obvious reminder of the value of doing this less than glamorous job.
