This past Wednesday, our volunteers were hard at work removing invasive ivy at Lay Wildrose preserve. Over two hours, we cleared ivy from over 20 trees!

While English ivy doesn’t parasitize its tree hosts like other viny climbers, it weakens trees by trapping moisture on the bark (increasing the tree’s risk for disease and pests), competes for soil water, and adds mass and surface area to the structure of the canopy. All of these pieces significantly weaken trees to the point that high wind events easily topple the trees.

Stewardship Associate Ben Wymer @awoodswalk_photography got some photos of this red-tailed hawk nest at one of GPCs properties earlier this year. Ben is an awesome photographer and naturalist and has prints to bid on during the 2023 Conservation Celebration!

Far from uncommon, red-tailed hawks nesting on any property are a good sign of ecosystem health - they need a big range, plenty of food to raise healthy chicks, and most of all some peace and quiet. You'd probably struggle to find this nest now with leaf out in the forest, one of the benefit of early spring time in the field.

Keep an eye on the skies this weekend - birds of prey harness thermals rising into the air to glide across the landscape where they can search for prey and keep an eye out for interlopers!

Doesn't it feel good to leave a place better than when you found it?

We know that our friends at the US Navy and the Port of Bremerton agree! We had two separate days of stewardship at Newberry Woods Community Forest for Earth Day last week and made a big dent in Scotch broom removal there!

Thanks to the Friday crew from the Navy, who came out and got things started! The Kitsap Sun also came out and covered to project (link in our bio). Newberry Woods Community Forest wouldn't exist without the help of the U.S. Navy REPI Program!

Thanks to our Saturday crew from the Port of Bremerton who came and continued the hard work! We were grateful to have Commissioner Axel Strakeljahn,
