Earlier this week, the Land Labs team was busy preparing for this fall's school field trips at Grovers Creek Preserve when Community Engagement Manager Claire Voris found a new friend! This small Pacific chorus frog hung out (pun intended), with the educators while they talked about how to communicate forest resilience and stewardship to students.

Did you know that fall is one of the best times of

Did you know that fall is one of the best times of year for planting? The long runway to the next growing season gives them time to establish and get used to their new surroundings, allowing them to better endure periods of heat and drought.

Depending on your point of view, you might not be looking forward to the rain in the forecast and the beginning of fall. But all those tender young plants in restoration projects across the state will benefit from more water after a tough summer! Oregon white ash, like this one at Martha John Creek Preserve, are resilient species and this one will hopefully reach full maturity and dig deep into the water table. But until it does, rain will be its lifeblood.

When a land trust plants trees, we are investing in the future, so we need to do our best to make sure they get a good start. This is all the more powerful knowing that the people planting the trees and the members supporting the work won't see that tree reach maturity!

Don't miss out on an opportunity to help improve Grovers Creek Preserve this upcoming Wednesday, September 27th! We have been using material from our ecological forestry practices to build habitat piles and we could use your help. These piles provide refuge for birds, mammals, and invertebrates while the forest regenerates and welcomes in a more diverse plant community. The animals that use habitat piles even help disperse seeds and pollinate plants!

Join us to support this preserve, hang out with fellow nature enthusiasts, and learn a little bit along the way!

With all the important work Executive Directors do

With all the important work Executive Directors do, it would be easy to never find time to get out in the field! Of course, that's the beauty of being a leader at a land trust: appreciating the places you helped conserve. We caught GPC's Executive Director, Nate Daniel, out in the field braving devil's club and salmonberry along one of the streams we protect along Hood Canal. Nate knows well that we all need to get outside and appreciate the land and the water!

We hope you can find some time to get outside and appreciate the natural world this weekend! While we work to conserve land just for wildlife, GPC also has a variety of properties that are open to the public.

GPC staff got out to visit the Lind Conservation E

GPC staff got out to visit the Lind Conservation Easement on the Key Peninsula today and helped get ready for this weekend's Walk and Talk there. Working hard together in the field is a great way for everyone to feel connected to the places we help protect and the communities we collaborate with all while building strength in our team!

We're grateful for all the interest in registration for the Lind CE and Home Cemetery Walk and Talk this weekend and wish we had room for everyone - the limited spots went fast! We hope we'll see you at another Walk and Talk in the coming months.

What's going on here? You're getting a sneak peek at a restoration project at Martha John Creek Preserve. Stay tuned to learn more about GPC's work in collaboration with Port Gamble S'Klallams to restore this pasture to a riparian habitat brimming with native plants and wildlife!

Though it might be hard to catch flowering at this time of year, we caught this plant in our restoration work at Marth John Creek Preserve near Port Gamble blooming recently. This sweet flowering shrub loves wet feet and produces fruit that birds like Cedar Waxwings love. Hint: its other native relatives are vines!

Keep an ear to the skies tonight - there are lots

Keep an ear to the skies tonight - there are lots of birds moving over Kitsap County as fall migration picks up. Many of the songbirds that migrate to and from our region undertake nocturnal migrations and as they fly in flocks hundreds of feet overhead, you can hear them call to eachother through the darkness.

This Black-throated Gray Warbler (photo credit: @wingtrip) is one of the species that breeds on GPC properties and are currently headed to Mexico for the winter.

Last night the incredible website Birdcast.info (a collaborative project of @cornellbirds, who is helping fund some of GPC's monitoring efforts), estimated that 300,000 birds migrated over Kitsap County! Even if you don't stay up to listen for them, you can certainly dream about all those birds flying overhead! Go check out the BirdCast website for more great information about migrating birds.
