Walk and Talk: Benthic Sampling
August 24, 2023 , 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Walk and Talk: Benthic Sampling
Where: GPC’s Curley Creek Tyner Preserve. Directions to this preserve will be provided via email after the attendee completes registration. Please RSVP!
What: Did you know that Washington’s littlest stream bugs can sometimes tell us the most about the health of our local watersheds? Join us on Thursday, August 24th from 10-12 pm at Curley Creek Tyner Preserve for a Walk and Talk focused on benthic sampling and community science. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and your shoes a little wet as we explore Curley Creek and Tyner Pond to see what’s hiding below the surface. Caddisflies, stoneflies, and midges, oh my! Let GPC’s team walk you through how to identify your macroinvertebrate haul and make some inferences about water quality using a Pollution Tolerance Index. All nets, waders, and sampling equipment will be provided. Please bring your oldest and least precious tennis shoes to the event if you plan to do some creek exploration. Keep in mind that the creek’s rocky bottom can be slick and uneven, but the rest of the preserve’s terrain is mostly flat and there are lots of sampling tasks that can be accomplished from the banks if you’d prefer to stay dry. Save your spot! Sign up today!
