February Work Party: Grovers Creek Preserve
February 24 , 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Join Great Peninsula Conservancy for our brand-new stewardship work party series: “Coarse Woody Debris Countdown”! We will be returning to Grover’s Creek Preserve to build twenty-eight more habitat piles and constructed logs to fulfill a grant with the Natural Resources Conservation Service over the next months. Come out on February 24th to contribute to one of GPC’s most ambitious restoration projects, learn about habitat restoration in young forests, and spend a Saturday moving logs with some neat folks!
(Can’t make it to the work party this month but still interested? No worries! We have the same event planned for March and April so stay tuned!)
What: The goal is to build 3 habitat piles and 2 constructed logs! Learn more about the function of habitat piles in our forests here.
Where: Grovers Creek Preserve, Poulsbo, WA (Google Map)
When: Saturday, February 24th from 10:00am-12:30pm
Where: Grovers Creek Preserve in Indianola, WA – additional parking information and directions will be sent in an email when your sign-up is confirmed.
Details:
- Accessibility: We will walk approximately a mile (15-20 minutes) to access the work site via a relatively uneven and narrow trail and access to the area where our habitat pile will be built requires stepping over large logs and downed debris. We will be working primarily with our hands and hand tools such as loppers and handsaws. The work will involve lifting logs, including squatting, bending and lifting motions. GPC will provide tools, gloves, helmets, and eye protection.
- What to bring: Please bring your own rain gear, close-toed boots, and other weather appropriate layers. A water bottle and snack are two great additions to any outdoor outing. (Bringing kiddos? Great! Keep in mind that we think this task is best suited for ages 10 and up. While our helmets do size down significantly, consider bringing your child’s bike helmet along for a more comfortable fit).
