Join GPC for a Walk & Talk focused on climate resilient forest management at Grovers Creek Preserve on Saturday Dec 16th from 10am-12pm!

We invite you to learn about the “ins-and-outs” of GPC’s forest management strategies in North Kitsap and consider the question: How can stewards manage climate resilient forests? You will have the opportunity to try out some of these stewardship activities yourself with the Land Labs Education Team!

Join GPC staff Saturday December 2, 10am-12:30pm for a work party at Grovers Creek!

We'll be building habitat piles out of downed, woody debris. Habitat piles create protected pockets for small mammals, amphibians and birds. As the habitat pile decomposes, it mimics the conditions of a nurse log, creating soil conditions that help propagate the next generation of trees and understory plants in a forest’s life cycle.

We're so grateful for our volunteers! Thanks to the @greatergigfdn Envirocorps for bringing a bunch of intrepid volunteers out to Rocky Creek Preserve. We hauled literal tons of illegally dumped trash out of the watershed! All the while we could hear salmon down in the creek - a very obvious reminder of the value of doing this less than glamorous job.

On Sat Nov 18 folks braved the cold, 8 am early start to search for birds during a Walk & Talk at Point No Point led by Brendan McGarry, one of the many birding experts and enthusiasts on GPC's staff.

From Anna's hummingbird (pictured sitting on a branch) to marbled murrelets, participants explored the various bird species supported by the conserved habitats at Point No Point. A total of 47 birds were seen or heard by the group!

Land Labs has been enjoying the beautiful weather this week at Grovers Creek. Students have been learning about ecological forestry, helping GPC build habitat piles, and being regailed by Community Engagement Coordinator Gabriel Newton!

#Spidersunday is a thing right? It might take you

#Spidersunday is a thing right? It might take you a moment to notice the spider in the photo and your gut reaction might be one of horror. But we promise you that the vast majority of spiders are harmless and all of them fill valuable niches in their native ecosystems.

GPC staff found this pretty little spider at Grovers Creek Preserve last week, someone who might benefit from the habitat piles we're building there. We identified it as Callobius pictus - like a lot of invertebrates, it doesn't have any common or English names. This native species is in the family Amaurobiidae also known as hacklemesh spiders. They live in crevices and under rocks or tree bark and create webs that cover the ground surrounding their retreats (where they hide out during the day). Not all spiders create webs to catch food, and those that do build a variety of forms other than a web strung up to catch flying insects.
